Dublin

Barack Obama and Joe Biden will be in Dublin at Dublin Coffman High School tomorrow, starting at 4:30.

4.2 billion for CheckFree

Online banking/bill-paying company CheckFree was sold for a whopping $4.2 billion dollars today. I hadn’t realized, but the company was founded in Dublin, Ohio, though it’s been headquartered in Atlanta for some time now. 900 people still work at their Dublin offices.

I’m a MyCheckFree customer, and up until they got rid of the ability to pay off credit cards earlier this year, the service was pretty damn convenient. Now, not so much. And I’ve found that online check-writing through regular banks is awful. I used BankOne’s, now Chase’s, online service once and probably won’t do so again. To get a payment to my landlord on the first, they withheld the money two weeks in advance! That’s not helping me- they’re helping themselves.

Banks clearly aren’t feeling much in the way of competitive heat or they’d work harder to improve these things.

Dublin Irish Festival this weekend

The 20th Dublin Irish Festival kicks off today at 4. It goes the whole weekend. The festival website is here, or print out a schedule here (pdf). Interesting bit of history behind the festival:

Dublin, Ohio, resident Mary Margaret McLernon traveled to Ireland in 1987. That same year, in August, Dublin attained city status. During her visit, McLernon discovered that Dublin, Ireland, was preparing for its 1988 millennium celebration.

“I thought it would be great to establish a connection between the two Dublins, especially since we would celebrate our first anniversary as a city the same year that Dublin, Ireland, would celebrate its 1,000th anniversary.”

Fireworks and the Fourth

Fireworks #23

Maureen McCabe has a round-up of Fourth of July activities in the Columbus metro area. Musical highlights include Buckwheat Zydeco in Grove City and K.C. and the Sunshine Band in Dublin. And there are plenty of fireworks displays scheduled, starting tomorrow night in Grove City, with most of them on Wednesday. including Columbus’s Red, White, and Boom will be on Tuesday. Check out the Dispatch’s fireworks list.

Wendy’s for sale?

From Business First, news that Wendy’s might be put up for sale:

Wendy’s International Inc. said Monday that selling the Dublin-based hamburger chain is becoming a stronger option as it examines alternatives for the business.

“While a sale remains only one of the alternatives under consideration, we believe it merits more thorough examination,” Chairman James V. Pickett said in a statement….

The company said it expected to earn between $1.09 to $1.23 a share, compared with its previous prediction of up to $1.32 a share. The forecast excludes up to $60 million in charges related to pension settlement costs, other expenses related to the special committee, and any restructuring costs.

In an effort to combat the soft sales, the company said it is cutting prices at its restaurants.

In my inexpert opinion, the burger joint is a very crowded field, and getting more crowded with newer, regional chains. Wendy’s has done very little to distinguish themselves lately. Non-burger and fries chains are also growing, in part because they’re perceived to be healthier- which isn’t always the case.
