Right Angle Blog’s low blow

More blog baseball here. Read at your own risk.

Matt Naugle of Right Angle Blog posted earlier today about Jerid at Buckeye State Blog’s father’s 1986 DUI conviction. Few have been tougher on Jerid than I have, but posting this kind of info on family members isn’t acceptable. My criticisms are always focused on what Jerid says or does. I would never dream of digging up dirt on any blogger’s family members, or publishing it if someone sent it to me.

Matt has removed the post. He should also apologize.

As you can imagine there’s plenty of reaction. Here’s Jerid himself:

I’m just a 24 year old law student, please don’t attack my family. If you insist on being an asshole, go after me.

I’m not ashamed of my father. I’m not ashamed of my mother. They’ve made plenty of mistakes in their lives, and I’m sure I’ve followed suit. But that doesn’t relate back to our political debate. Not in the least. Not a tiny bit.

Here’s Brian at Plunderbund:

I believe that this kind of ugliness must be confronted to be defeated.

As Jerid points out, this stuff has absolutely nothing to do with anything other than trying to embarrass and attack uninvolved third parties.

Left of Ohio:

So Right Angle Blog came back from their maintenance with all the grace and journalistic integrity of a super market tabloid. In a post where Matt Naugle announced that the changes were complete he attacked an Ohio blogger by posting details of their father’s DUI (which took place 2 months before I was even born), claiming this was why the blogger defended Frankie Coleman.

That’s all correct. (And Matt has done this before with a post on Jennifer Brunner’s son.) One major theme running through all of those posts though is the idea that it is the Ohio GOP that’s responsible, because as Brian puts it:

I’d ignore them entirely, if there wasn’t significant evidence that Naugle is running an astroturf blog over there, and thus is doing this at the behest of the Ohio GOP.

And Jerid’s post is titled “The Republicans Would Like You To Know About My Father’s Alcohol Problem”.

I have no idea to what extent, if any, the Ohio GOP is behind Matt’s site. I do know that at least some of the speculation in those Plunderbund links is wrong, since it involved me and Matt maybe being the same person, which I know from first-hand evidence not to be true. So I don’t think Jerid has the facts to support saying that it’s “The Republicans” who would like you to have this info. Jerid has conflated Matt’s postings with the entire Ohio Republican Party before, as Lincoln Logs has observed.

UPDATE: More from Blue Bexley, and from VikingSpirit’s blog, “RAB and BSB: Crossing the Line“.

Thanks for the post, you nearly entirely cover exactly what I think. The post wasn’t the best choice ever, but it’s a fair point that even in his wounded state Jerid was still able to make some political hay of th eissue tying it to “republicans” at large rather than one republican at one blog.

That said, I wish we could all get together and decide where the lines are. Is dredging up a DUI in bad taste? Yeah, ok. But what exactly does photoshopping Naugle onto Jabba the Hut have to do with politics. That is the standard that Jerid lays out, and I don’t see that as anything less than a senseless attack, just like today’s episode. I know, the DUI is worse, because it was Jerid’s dad - but a personal attack is a personal attack is a personal attack, and I’m not sure I understand how a person can defend one while attacking the other.

Jerid is good at spin, and he plays the victim very well. If he would just share his guide of standards with is, I think it would go a long way in avoiding such episodes in the future.

We’re definitely being subjected to juvenile behavior from both sides.

  3. Posted by Jerid | Jun 29, 2007 5:30 pm

On March 19th the ORP posted my mother’s home. That’s a big part of where the “Republicans” label comes from. The ORP has yet to apologize to my mother - even after they received letters from Cuyahog County GOP central committeemen. phone number and encouraged folks to call it. In my book, that’s precedent for what Matt did. If you have a political party engaging in this type of behavior it’s hard to deny that as encouragement for your supporters.

To be fair. The ORP went after Mom. Naugle went after dad.

call the wahmbulance matty. your ties to bill todd are relevant, you made them relevant, and your problems with photoshop stem from the fact that you aren’t clever enough to use it yourself.

you went after someone’s family. your party makes a habit of it, particularly with jerid. if you find quarter in “Ohio’s most popular and influential Republican website” then Ohio’s Republicans are responsible.

  5. Posted by Dave Hickman | Jun 29, 2007 6:02 pm

    Jerid,

Now everyone in the blogosphere should go after you instead of your parents. You deserve it… they don’t.

I get tired of you whining every time someone writes a negative word about you when you don’t think twice about handing-out loads of criticism about others.

As George Nemeth would say: “Call the wahmbulance,” Brian

I’m not standing-up for Matt Naugle, but I understand where he’s coming from when it seems that Jerid’s sole purpose in blogging is to find as many ways as possible to slam Matt and others, including me.

Jerid, “turn about is fair play” and it doesn’t always come back at ya in fair and equal doses… but it does come back to you, usually three times worse.

You can continue your “slam and ban” antics on the BS blog if you choose, but it makes you look way worse than anyone you attack. Nine times out of ten your attacks on others come off as being juvenile and petty.

Of course it was over the line- But I’ll never apologize. Jerid has been testing me for weeks seeing if I’d get in the mud with him or not. I did, the post is down, and I couldn’t be any less sorry.

  8. Posted by Tim Russo | Jun 29, 2007 6:30 pm

no one expects you to be sorry matt. so why did you take the post down? aren’t you proud of your oppo research chops? if you’re not gonna apologize, why don’t you put it back up? it’s such a fine piece of blogging, no?

you’ve been in the mud your entire blogging career, didn’t need anyone to “test” you to get in. you’re on the payroll of half the republican party, it’s relevant. other people’s families aren’t relevant.

  9. Posted by Jerid | Jun 29, 2007 6:36 pm

Matt, your piece on SoS Brunner’s son was a fine post which exemplified your high standards and values. Bravo.

If I’m in the mud because I raise valid political questions, you must be rollin’ around in the fire. Hot down there?

  10. Posted by Jerid | Jun 29, 2007 6:39 pm

PS. You better get some more oppo on my the rest of my family ready (I had a cat named winkie, she used to pee in the neighbors yard all the time. If you interview my old neighbor Ms. Manlestein you might get somethin’ real good on Winkie. I’m talking dirt!) because I’ve got some good stuff coming out at BSB for Monday.

    #6 & #8 - Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim

You write to Matt: “you’ve been in the mud your entire blogging career”

Again, I’m not standing-up for Matt, but I guess I’ll have to remind you about your muddy past Mr. Tim Russo (what I write below can be confirmed in court documents and other public records)

    Does this sound familiar Timmy?:

Timmy and kiddies sittin’ in a tree
    K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First comes love, then comes police
Now Tim’s known as a sex offender

So, Tim… why don’t you share with us, in your own words, what happened to your “entire blogging career” and how far Connie Schultz and the Plain Dealer had to go to make sure that hundreds of thousands of people have opportunity to know about your muddy ways even if you no longer publish your defunct Democracy Guru blasts o’ mud.

Tim, you’re not going to make some miraculous comeback. You were exposed (both figuratively and literally). Your little kiddie lover can’t help you out of the hole you got yourself into (both figuratively and literally).

  13. Posted by Tim Russo | Jun 29, 2007 7:26 pm

oh, hickman. you’re such a lovely person. i do love you so.

  14. Posted by Dave Hickman | Jun 30, 2007 1:57 am

    Dearest Tim,

When I first encountered your “lovely” personality disorder, you front-paged a story about me that had the headline of “Dave Hickman is a fucking moron.” You did this because I sent a few emails out to you and other bloggers about election reform and election protection. I had never dealt with such a classy blogger as you. But, I determined to do a little tit for tat for every ignorant word you printed from that point on.

I know you couldn’t have known that I don’t embarrass all that easy and I don’t go away. Guess what… I’m still here Timmy and you are severely weakened from what you were when I first encountered your Democracy Guru blasts (a blog which is now defunct).

Also, when I first encountered you, I didn’t know about your fetish for children or about your sex offender conviction. It wasn’t until Cindy (Heights Mom & As Ohio Goes) took you on and eventually Connie Schultz got the Plain Dealer to plaster your severely soiled laundry all over NEO until eventually the story about your sex offender conviction spread to nearly every political blog in the state and many national blogs.

I’ll just say this… YOU DON’T KNOW WHEN TO SHUT UP. Dude, you are severely damaged goods. Few if any want to associate with you, except the worst of the worst blog bashers (ie - BS blog and PlunderDUMB)

Tim, you are NOT “a lovely person” and I do NOT “love you” in any way, especially if what some have been saying about your sex conviction is true. I’ve read that you solicited sex with a young boy rather than a young girl. If that is the case, I will never fulfill your fetish for young little boys because I’m a large 40-something heterosexual man.

Didn’t you get enough man-handling when you were in prison? I’ve heard that inmates don’t like sexual predators who take advantage of little boys. How’d your cell mates treat you Tim? Did they say you have a purdy mouth and tell you to squeal like a pig? If they did, the “pig” tag is fitting for a sex offender bullshit artist like yourself.

  16. Posted by Scott Pullins | Jun 30, 2007 6:41 pm

Hey Jerid, don’t you owe my wife an apology first?

  17. Posted by Jerid | Jun 30, 2007 7:39 pm

Pretty sure your wife followed the proud Pullins family tradition of going apeshit crazy online, in my opinion. Nice attempt at linking that to the current situation though.

It really is a shame she called Eric and screwed with his wife, and then emailed me crazy shit. So I guess in a way you two are on the same page with Naugle, just not as the current situation.

***…all of this is, of course, in my op pinion.
