Coulter and Edwards: the downward spiral

Seems like everyone’s got Ann Coulter on the brain today: Plunderbund, Writes Like She Talks, Buckeye State Blog, Progress Ohio. (If I was a Democratic blogger, I’d suspect a coordinated campaign!) It’s all about her row with John and Elizabeth Edwards- oh and look, Edwards has a page at his campaign website devoted to Coulter, and they’re using Coulter to solicit donations. Each of these two is using the other for their own benefit of course. And they deserve each other. But this is nothing new in politics.

The funniest part of this is from Edwards’s site: “This Monday, Ann Coulter took her pattern of personal attacks to a new level. On national television she said that rather than hurling more homophobic slurs….” The Edwards campaign is talking about homophobic slurs!? That’s rich. What happened to “I’m not comfortable around those people“?

I’ve said it before- out of all the Democratic candidates, Edwards is the only one who I’m beginning to actively despise. Phony with a capital F.

UPDATE: This is good.

Brian - now, come on. Even if absolutely everything you say and intimate about what you believe regarding these incidents is taken as 100% legit, accurate and something with which I agree, Coulter’s behavior still stands out, on its own, as something I simply do not believe you would encourage or emulate. True or false? Seriously, okay?

  2. Posted by Brian | Jun 27, 2007 3:38 pm

Jill, I’m not defending Coulter. She’s mostly unserious, and her shtick is kind of old. But she’s not running for president.

  3. Posted by Jill | Jun 27, 2007 4:28 pm

Elizabeth Edwards isn’t running for president either, Brian. And I’m not sure how whether she’s serious or not has anything to do with it.

Do you believe you would encourage or emulate her behavior? I do not need you to answer it but the answer to that question is exactly why the party she professes to support is in disarray.

  4. Posted by Brian | Jun 27, 2007 5:48 pm

I’m referring to John Edwards and Ann Coulter using each other in a cynical game in which they both benefit. It’s all about campaign contributions and ratings and book sales. Elizabeth Edwards isn’t the issue.

I don’t get why you’re phrasing your question as a hypothetical- would I encourage or emulate her behavior. I think the question should be, if you feel it needs to be asked at all- do I encourage or emulate her behavior. I don’t think I’m doing that.

  5. Posted by Jill | Jun 27, 2007 6:03 pm

Ah - I ask it that way, Brian, because I hold all behavior to that standard - my own as well, and I definitely fail. No question there. But that doesn’t mean I don’t aspire. This is not about aiding and abetting. We’re all aiding and abetting here so long as we’re giving them attention - that’s what Coulter wants and, I suppose, the Edwards’ as well ultimately re: the candidacy.

But yes - I am in fact asking the very specific question, as in, do unto others and teach your children well. Coulter’s behavior is unacceptable as a model of anything. At least Elizabeth Edwards tried to find a way to say, get real Ann. But Ann doesn’t want to get real.

And I’m asking you - how would you feel if this was your wife, your mother, your daughter, who behaved in Coulter’s way?

You’ve read enough of my writing to know that that’s what I like to hear about. Whether what you say or do encourages Coulter or emulates Coulter (which I don’t believe you do at all) is absolutely not my question.

    Jill,

In all of your Pepper Pike supposed brilliance, there is one concept that you have yet to grasp… MESSAGE CONTROL.

Although you constantly profess to be against Ann Coulter, your predictable anti-Coulter publications keep her name front and center in the Ohio blogosphere.

If you’d quit writing the name Ann Coulter and whatever attached story, there would be at least 50 percent less publicity for Ann Coulter being distributed on Ohio political blogs.

STFU about Ann Coulter, your blabber just keeps the fires burning and the money rolling into Coulter’s pockets.

Dave, take it down a notch or two.
